St Mary’s Police Station Officer- in-Charge Inspector Sithembile Mhlanga, who died on Sunday, has been declared a liberation war heroine.

Insp Mhlanga, whose Chimurenga name was Margaret Takawira, was 56.

She will be buried today at Warren Hills Provincial Heroes Acre.

Zanu-PF Secretary for Administration Dr Ignatius Chombo, in a statement, said President Mugabe had accorded Cde Mhlanga liberation war heroine status.

“His Excellency, the President and First Secretary of Zanu-PF, Cde Mugabe, has conferred liberation war heroine status on the late Cde Sithembile Mhlanga who died on 15 May 2016,” reads the statement.

Chaminuka District secretary Cde Simon Bvunzawabaya said they had requested for a heroine status taking into consideration Cde Mhlanga’s contribution in the liberation struggle and after independence.

Cde Mhlanga joined the liberation struggle in 1976 in Mozambique and stayed at Chikwekwete Camp in 1976 and went to Tembwe in 1977 where she received military training in 1978.

After training, she was moved to Mavonde base in 1979 where she operated at Gaza Province and Mavonde Zone in Manica Province.

She obtained the highest rank of being company medical officer in 1979 and was attested into the Zimbabwe Republic Police in 1985.

She worked at different stations and districts as she rose through the ranks until she was promoted to the rank of inspector.

She commanded different stations as Officer-in-Charge such as Featherstone, Chivhu Traffic and ZRP Mabvuku.

Cde Mhlanga died after she collapsed outside her house in the evening.

She is survived by six children -three girls and three boys. Mourners are gathered at ZRP St Mary’s Police Station.
