Proverbs 19 vs 20; “Listen to counsel and receive instruction, That you may be wise in your latter days.”

Being told what to do is probably one of the hardest things to accept. Being told when you are wrong and having to accept correction can be a very difficult pill to swallow.

I have had the privilege of hanging out with people who are younger than me, and there is one that stands out. Whenever we speak she is quick to put me in place, she tells me when I am wrong and she is not scared to point me in the right direction.

In most instances I am outrightly told no and that I should rethink my suggestion or viewpoint. I suppose the energy of youth creates confidence, a bit like when David stepped out and believed he could defeat Goliath. He had faith that if he was given the opportunity to fight Goliath, he would conquer.

All the old men around him had lost all hope of waging a war against Goliath and succeeding. What was in front of them was impossibility; the belief that this giant could not be stopped was firmly planted in their minds. We are guilty of being like Saul’s army, we break down and lose faith at the earliest opportunity; we see all the insurmountable walls that cannot be scaled.

As I thought about the conversations I have had with my young friend, I could clearly see how often we lose track of things, reach conclusions and hinder our ability to succeed based on all the obstacles we place in front of us. However within the context of the advice we are given, we must also be aware that age comes with a certain amount of wisdom that has been gained because of experience.

It’s not always easy to accept a different opinion from someone else’s but God places people in our lives that are meant to help us along, direct us, encourage us and more importantly straighten us out.

We should not always look at correction as a bad thing. When people have a different viewpoint our natural tendency should not be to resist. Instead we should be open minded and look at things with an objective to improve.

Saul could have totally refused for David to go into battle against Goliath, but because he opened his mind and allowed him to, history was changed forever. The young man helped to bring about a great victory and lift the spirits of an otherwise broken and fearful people.

Be blessed.
