James 3 vs 17-18: “But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.”

Every other day, people give you advice on different things, you receive a great amount of views and opinions from different people pertaining to what you should or should not do.

Ever so often, we take the advice of those who are very close to us, they constitute our think tank and they are the people we turn to when our own decision making skills fail. It’s so much easier to abdicate on your responsibility and work on the basis of what you are told.

However, the majority of tragedies and mistakes have occurred as a result of individuals not taking charge and giving up on their God given responsibility to make correct choices.

Someone once said “common sense is not so common”, this statement rings true because the ability to make the right decisions, based on logic, is not as easy as it sounds. A story is told in which King Rehoboam, having ascended the throne, was faced with a decision to make. He had to decide whether to increase the country’s taxes or lower them, as was being requested by his citizens.

The king had two sets of advisors, one made up of his peers and the other being the advisors who had served his father. The king, after listening to both parties, settled on the advice that was given by his peers. This one tragic misguided decision making process resulted in an act that would ultimately break up his kingdom.

It is important that, as we go through our day to day life, we diligently sift through all the advice given, commit it to the Lord and ensure that the decisions that we ultimately make are based on wisdom.

Too many times we take the advice of people who do not mean well, who lack the insight of the Lord and who do not have wisdom. Wrong decisions lead to catastrophic consequences and have long-term effects that go beyond the advice given.

It is essential that in all we do, we hear the voice of the Lord and where we cannot, we ensure that the advice we are being offered makes sense.

We all have people we consult in our lives, some constructive and others not so much. The onus is on us to be certain about the ones who have been placed in our lives to genuinely assist us, rather than mislead us.

Be blessed.
