Walking in Spirit: Life of significance

Hebrews 10:24; “Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works.” For a very long time like many people I know, I have defined success in terms of what one acquires and the position they hold in society.

This definition is what the world has made us believe, that in order to be significant you must hold a high office and drive a very big car with an equal amount of prominence. Sadly, this definition is wrong. It’s not so much who you become, but rather what your total contribution is.

We are mistaken in our belief that our contributions should be huge and marked by a level of significance that the world acknowledges. It is rather the little things we do to make the places we live better.

The Bible says, “and the greatest one of them is love,” meaning that to love is the greatest gift one can generally contribute. It starts with loving the places we live in: our country, our neighbours, our brothers and sisters and the general desire to uplift rather than to take.

It’s so much easier to receive, it’s even easier to give excuses in terms of how you cannot contribute to the betterment of society because you do not have or you are disadvantaged. We want to succeed at the expense of others, yet we do not want the reverse to happen to us.

Every day is an opportunity to be a citizen who makes a significant difference.

We always think that a contribution must be something big, yet it starts with something as simple as investing our time. How do we currently spend our time, do we invest it in causes other than our own? The time you spend in conversation with a youngster needing guidance, the time you spend fixing the pothole outside your house and not waiting for it to become a manhole, while assigning the responsibility to someone else, is all a part of who you are and how you should ultimately be judged .

Love is what will drive us to be contributors, people who go beyond self, who will get their hands dirty at whatever level they may be to make a difference.

The LORD planted the seed of love in your heart, you are called to unleash its remarkable power to do good and make the world a better place. What will you do to start being a significant contributor to the well-being of others?

Be blessed.
