James 4:14 NKJV; “Whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.”

I read about a rather tragic story a few days ago. The article spoke about a man who was involved in a car accident. Apparently, he was trapped in the vehicle for many hours. Despite the numerous people who passed by the scene of the accident, no one could rescue him because the car was so mangled.

The police arrived at the scene of the accident, but given the remote area in which the accident occurred, it proved impossible to access the relevant emergency services to rescue him. A passer-by forcibly extracted his phone from the wreck, dialled his last number and informed his family of the situation. After a few hours members of his family arrived, in the entourage was his 21-year-old son who then forcibly removed his father from the wreck.

He was then finally whisked off to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The professional assistance he required to get him out of the vehicle never arrived. He agonisingly sat in that wreck for hours in immense pain, if he had been rescued a little earlier he would have lived.

As people passed by the scene, they were shocked and horrified at the circumstances, but after glancing for a bit, sympathising with him, they would move on and proceed with their journeys. It got me thinking that life is, but a fleeting moment, here today and gone tomorrow. No one knows the day nor the time our Maker will call us. It is, however, inevitable that a day awaits all of us when we will be called to leave this earth.

As we go about our day to day business, we do not know when our last breath shall be. Interestingly as the people passed by, despite their sympathy they would carry on with their journeys. This is a bit like the people around us, they spend so much time tormenting and making life difficult for us, but their impact on our lives is only, but for a period. Before we know it, they are gone or they have moved on to something else.

Each day that we are alive is a gift from God. Let’s make the best use of every minute. Are there relations you need to fix or things you need to do that you keep putting off? Do them now for you do not know when this journey called life will end. Be the person that everybody will wish had never left.

Be blessed.
