VP Mphoko scoffs at Karanga presidency

VP Mphoko

VP Mphoko

Tendai Mugabe Senior Reporter
Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko yesterday said it is not a given that a Karanga person will succeed President Mugabe, saying people should not lose sleep over statements by some excitable people in Zanu-PF.

VP Mphoko said some people were already insinuating that President Mugabe was a Zezuru and it followed that a Karanga should succeed him.

Introducing First Lady Dr Grace Mugabe at a function where she was assessing the impact of the drought caused by the El Nino phenomenon at Kanyemba Secondary School in Chiweshe, Mashonaland Central yesterday, VP Mphoko said people should not fool themselves thinking that the Presidency was up for grabs.

“There is nowhere in our Constitution where it is written that this country was liberated by a Karanga, a Ndau, a Zezuru or a Ndebele,” he said.

“What we hear now that President Mugabe is a Zezuru and if he steps down a Karanga should take over is not what we fought for. That is a Rhodesian mind. Don’t lose sleep over statements by some excitable people because there is nothing like that.

“We have party ideology and if you jump away from that you risk being hit by landmines out there. You will die, it’s your fault. Don’t say I have not warned you. So, let’s not fool ourselves thinking that the position of Presidency is up for grabs by everyone.

“Number two, being greedy and too ambitious makes you a bad subordinate. That is the first sin. You cannot separate greediness and some bad ambitions. Satan had a beautiful voice in the Bible, but he could not contend with his position. He wanted to take over God’s position and he fell down.”

VP Mphoko said he was happy with his post as Vice President.

He said by virtue of that position, out of 14 million people in Zimbabwe, he was number three after President Mugabe and his colleague Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Speaking at the same occasion, Zanu-PF national commissar Cde Saviour Kasukuwere said the party would kick out all provincial chairpersons who defied directives.

He made reference to Mashonaland East, Masvingo and Midlands provinces.

“If you are a Zanu-PF member, do Zanu-PF things not to try and intimidate us,” he said. “We called for a rally in the presence of all provincial chairpersons that the President is coming. Some of you go to the President and say we were not informed – it’s Kasukuwere’s project. Pasi nemi. Ibvai pazvigaro izvozvo tange taneta nemi.

“Amai (First Lady) don’t be intimidated. Apa zvekuuya paMazowe makatakura magrenade forget it. Mashonaland Central will not accept it.

“We are going to die for President Mugabe. If it means we die for him, we must die for him. You make grenades with petrol and paraffin. Who do you want to threaten? As I speak right now, they are busy trying to raise money for bail for those criminals. Why are you doing that? If you defend President Mugabe why are you defending criminals?

“Who did you want to bomb? Who chose that target? Why do you go for the President? Amai, we need serious introspection. We don’t want to lie to each other. If you love the President, defend him.”

Cde Kasukuwere said the younger generation was also prepared to die for President Mugabe’s cause.

“Amai, go and tell the President that war veterans fought for the liberation struggle, but also the younger generation is prepared to die for President Mugabe’s cause,” he said.

“We don’t support President Mugabe, but we believe in President Mugabe. If he forms a church today, we will follow him. We don’t want people who fool the President pretending to love him more. You are busy defending criminals who wanted to kill the President. We know who did it and we are not scared of you. Amai, Mashonaland Central we are here for you.

Cde Kasukuwere was referring to the attempted bombing of the First Family’s Alpha Omega Dairy in Mazowe for which four people are already appearing in court with one having been convicted upon pleading guilty.

“Don’t threaten us,” he said. “There is no one who has title deeds for this country. We are tired of you, we are now removing gloves. Let’s go for the dry hands. Either you are behind Mugabe or get out of the party.

“Kana usingade pauri ipapo baya, pane ari kuda chair iyoyo.”

Cde Kasukuwere said he was the only intelligence officer who entered the headquarters of Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama, so people should not brag about their war credentials.”

Why is vp Mphoko so worried, about who will be the next president, if he has no presidential ambitions,as he wants us to believe? Everywhere he goes, that’s all he is talking about. The people will decide who the next president is going to be,you might be the one losing sleep,we’re not. There’s nothing in our constitution, that guarantees the next president, will be from ZANU PF either.

  • Mukotami

The last part is really mischievous, Did Kasukuwere really say that he was the only intelligence office to enter Renamo headquarters and that must suffice for liberation war credentials..?????? That is daftness of the highest order… Why should he worry about war credentials, they are not important at all, you do not have to cook them up, all you have to do is master the art of bootlicking….

    • Gunpoint

Mr Kasukuwere, please stop lying. I am someone who can dispute your assertion that you were at Dhlakama’s HQ. If you were or known its axact location why did you not give its coordinates to the Army so they could precisely bomb the place, whether Dhlakama was there or not. How did you extricate yourself out of Gorongosa as I don’t remember us bringing you out during the 1st or 2nd Gorongosa attack. You probably only knew of this HQ after the first attack but never got there as no CIO operative was flown there after the attack. By the 2nd attack we already knew the coordinates of the new location for Dhlakama’s HQ and he was missed by days. You were not with military intelligence hence could not have been there during the attack. For your own info Mr Kasukuwere, I was part of the military company tasked with extricating the Special Air Service (SAS) from Gorongosa should the need arise during their very long recce in Gorongos and Samatenje areas. Where were you. I took part in the attack on Gorongosa and can safely say you were not there at any point or time pre and post the operation. Tell the nation and the1st Lady the truth. The nation knows that upcoming politicians try to enhance their CV’s by falsehoods but to get to the level you are going is despicable. You are fine as an intelligence operative (probably not officer) who did other things but do not speak of areas that you have no knowledge about.I have nothing against you getting up the political stairs but do so truthfully. Do not pep up your CV like some CV’s we see that claim a Snr Zimbabwe politician did a building course in Zambia at the age of 9 or 11yrs. Which of the colonial Rhodesias would allow this to happen when black kids started school at 7yrs to 11yrs in the 50s and 60s. Taura chokwadi young man.

  • Zarura Zimbabgwe

So when did we have vp Mphoko as number three? Didn’t he go ballistic after vaHungwe said he was number three!?

There is a packing order and no one in the party likes it and therefore they don’t like the appointing powers but no one is prepared to state it… You may find yourself in an inferno.

  • Chiweshe1

I am a patriotic Zimbabwean, I am shedding tears as I am typing . ZANU PF is gone, its gone forever. I am very sorry Kasukuwere, an Intelligence Officer who signed the official secrecy act will not reveal an operational duty whatsoever and under whatever conditions ….what were you doing at Alfonso Dhlakama’s residence.., what is so special about that. Stop insulting Karanga people VP Mpoko, You have opened a Pandora’s box because of your ignorance,. For Mrs. Mugabe, sorry I could have called you Dr. but I do not recognize **,. in as much as ‘hungry’ people pretend liking you, No Zimbabwean is prepared to fight for your nonsense,. You lack the respect that should deserve a wife of the President.Stop insulting Service Chiefs , murikutungidza moto nePetrol , you are testing fast flowing Runde River with both legs ,. All those guys rallying behind you are are just criminals , and have no power to protect you. Stop insulting Service Chiefs and the Karanga People , this Karanga speech destroyed our beloved ZANU PF party yesterday….vana Kasukuwere, Kasukuwere aaah better munyarare zvenyu.

Analysts went to town soon after the PB meeting and said all sorts . ZPF was such a mature party it handled the issues very well. And two days later , the truth comes out. There was mention of dying in a burning house by one Mahoka, when she was “daring” VP ED. I played that part twice to really get what she said especially after mentioning the burning house. Readers easily relate this to the tragic passing on of Gen Mujuru. That’s too heavy a phrase or sentence to use given that that particular event raised deadly suspicions against very influential persons. And now in Chiweshe – the death issue goes a gear up. These ungrateful Presidential appointees who are going to landmines will die- bellowed the hefty Mphoko. Be warned . And Kasukuwere uses , not quite the word death, but the dry hands he mentioned do a better destroying job than gloves. and take note of his credentials there !!! Now my esteemed analysts what happened to the maturity you went to town about a day after PB meeting. One such was Joram. Please we are waiting for your incisive commentary on the Chiweshe developments. Bishop Lazarus is another – at least him had time so he can comment on both events. We love your analysis because its very guiding – left alone we thinks so many things and tinorasika. Please help with analysis. And our very own Prof Muzvinavhu, please help us here.

VP Mphoko please leave Karanga people alone. We have never talked about your tribe so far. You should know deep in your heart that what Chaminuka said about Ndebele people in terms of leadership stands. Please we do not even lose sleep if you do not set a foot in Masvingo province or any Karanga speaking district in this country ever.

Nyatsimbamutota look at the VP’s reckless statement and make judgements as soon as possible

  • BroMbumbunde

This is quite sad! Cry my beloved Zimbabwe. Grown men and women threatening each other with violence, wanting to die for the President, bragging about violence credentials…all this is a country reeling with gross lack of electricity, polluted urban water (if it comes out the tap), 2 million people facing starvation, industries closing every single day, to name a few nationally important issues. Please politicians, kindly focus on issues which will bring common good for the people of Zimbabwe! Leave those bombers to the Police & Courts!

  • DarkChild

All this talk of killing and dying is just criminal. Why should we have this in a country as peaceful as Zimbabwe, where we have a constitution and one man one vote that the liberators struggled for?

  • Brigadier Siyasutha Belamba

V.P.Mphoko a rich Zimbabwean running a number of Choppies supermarkets why such a successful man should be used by ** beats me. He has everything:is it greed Xhosa lakithi

nonsense, even Grace in my opinion does care about Mugabe. Factionalism is between Grace and Robert, they are fighting daily on Grace’s ambition to lead.
hazviite kuti murume wako auraya nyika iwe woda kutonga futi, whats the point ? Grace speech yenyu leaves a lot to be desired. Zimbabwe lets get rid of Kasukuwere and Jonso in our politics.

    What is his job then??

  • Muzezuru.

    Hondo nemakaranga yabva kupi???
    Mandevere nhasi vorwisa makaranga???
So – in a nutshell, the whole thing is now tribalistic.
Are we heading for another hutu and tutsi genocide???
    What’s bad about being mukaranga??
    Are they not people?//
    Are they not Zimbabweans??
Do they not have the same citizenship and democratic rights like any other Zimbabwean??
What is this whole mphoko beef with Karangas???
This — called mphoko does owe an aopology to the karanga people.
AND, why are ALL these Karanga people quite and not offended???
Do these people know english? Vakayenda kuchikoro here?

    • perekedza mwana

Shamwari, the very same questions you are asking are the ones in my head right now. What have, not only the Karangas done to deserve this?
Joice is Korekore, Kaukonde is Budya, Mutsvangwa is Zezuru, Simba Makoni is Manyika, and who is on the controls??? Herald should not have even carried this story. Soon we are likely to go the same way as Rwanda, Hutus versus Tutsis. But do we deserve to be driven into a civil war as Zimbabweans this way? By who? May be the Prof knows better. We are just a peace loving people, but someone is after making us fight. Why declare a war against the Karangas?

  • MemaZimbo

This Karanga issue you have brought up Mpoko, where is it coming from? That is why you don’t command any following from your own region – they know that you are so bigoted in your thinking. How dare you,a highly respected statesman, you utter such nonsense at a rally? I wonder what Joshua Nkomo would have felt if he was alive. You are a disgrace to say the least. After all, Mnangagwa is not going to answer you, but, you are not even ashamed to attack a fellow colleague in public. President Mugabe has vowed never to attack any African leader in public. What a contrast.

  • Ndanga

I am a Zezuru, but there is something terribly wrong about this heading.. the tribalist sentiments coming from the heading alone are stinking!
Also, the journalist is lying here, Mpoko did not insinuate that he is number 3 because of Mugabe and Mnangagwa, he meant the top two are Mugabe and his wife Grace, and the latter confirmed this in her address. I listened to Grace’s full address, these people are taking us for granted! A whole wife of a president anotaura nyaya dzemakuhwa on national television, and finishes the whole address achingopopota…?? Surely that party Zanu PF has gone to the dogs, and unfortunately taking the whole country down the same drain.

    • Mukotami

Listen to the address again, grace talks something about sellouts from a certain tribe and urges the listeners to figure out which tribe she then says that tribe will never get a top seat in power! if you listen to that ( seventh minute of the video posted by herald) you will realise that Mphoko was not just mentioning karangas as an example or in passing, you will see the real meaning of the headline… and you will be very scared and start searching for information about what really caused the Rwandan Genocide

  • omahn

I can bet my last dollar there is going to be lots of we were misquoted by the herald by this blandering cabal.

**. What have the generality of karangas got to do with the fighting for power in zpf? If he thinks by licking grace’s backside he will end up as the anointed one, he needs to wake up from his nightmare, fast.

  • Runde River

Mphoko Mphoko Mphoko what is this that you are saying. Some things are better left unsaid. Tribalism and ethnic issues have caused wars. What has gone wrong with this man. This is not right. Tribalism has no place in civilised society

  • bhegee

I am a Zezuru. I suckled Karanga milk. I am not Ndebele, but for a
Ndebele leader to threaten another tribe this way is something else. I
am afraid. Now I know. What are we saying here? Are we preparing for a
Gukurahundi revenge???? Please help me. I need help, serious help. Is
this the reason VaManyika appear to have been purged over the years? And
Zezurus too….? Now it’s maKaranga? What wrong have they done? Where
do the Kalangas or Tonga stand? This was seriously careless Cde Mphoko.
Herald, please we need a follow up story here to clarify issues.

    • Hoziya

That’s your own worry. You have heard it. Do not lie to us that you are Zezuru, if you are Karanga…count yourself several thousands of kilometers away from producing a president. Mphoko is very right! Who said Karangas must produce the next president?

      • Mukaranga.

Who said, they mustn’t.?? Are we people or not? Humans or not? If you cut us do we not bleed???

      • Runde River

Tell me you are not serious. This is very reckless especially when one considers that there has never been talk of tribes in this fight. In fact I have been proud of being Zimbabwean Until This Morning when I read this article. Mphoko remarks are a disgrace to humanity and he has grossly misfired. Mrs Mugabe could be Karanga but thats not been an issue because Zimbabwe has moved beyond talking of tribal politics when millions have died as a result in Burundi and Rwanda. To be talking of tribes when the whole world is moving towards obliteration of such views ,and to be putting emphasis on something that divides society when Zimbabweans have declared a day to celebrate unity. At a time when our children do not feel see or hear tribes but see people is the height of reckless mischief that could easily cost us the peace we currently cherish. This is indeed very unfortunate.

  • Chasura-madyirapazhe

Entering Gorongosa Dhlakama area was an operation done by ZNA and by then you were a mere driver at CIO Kasukuwere. We did better operations than what you know but we are not shouting loud like you.

  • mabwe

Iwe mudhara kwana. Why mentioning Karangas? Do you have any hard evidence that someone a Karanga should be next president??? You are a dull tribalist mboko!!! Rather spend your energy praying for your red lips to normalise

  • tonotya

Herald, now that fresh winds are astir, can I comment? We need allbody’s ideas to be on board if this country is to move forward, what? That you for unblocking me. Appreciated

  • Tinotya

As I read the whole saga of Zimbabwean politics from a very broad perspective, what is at stake here is a simple issue: it is called competition. Competition for leadership positions. To be specific , competition for the topmost political position in the country: that of president. And in that dogfight…all forces are going to be invoked…the forces of God and the forces of Satan….the trumpcards of tribes and the trumpcards of sexual orientation…the trumpcards of perceived/purpoted involvement in the liberation war and other dubious wars…Be that as it may, a competitive process needs to be driven by logic and knowledge underpinned by proper value systems. There has to be a proper system of choosing the leadership. Otherwise we are going to be haunted by the spectre of Hitler and the Rwandan genocide…I don’t particularly like Charamba, but I identify with his position. Surely the Presidential position is too important to trifle with…If murky ambitions are to be pandered to, in this part of the world of poverty-stricken, half educated masses…I foreseen some clever, ruthless busybody landing the prize on the back of the most unscrupulous and bloody campaign imaginable. There has to be systems that allow the elites to chug it out amongst themselves without touching the masses. Surely once you start this talk of tribal and ethnic retributions, you are invoking the spirits of war and plunder in an otherwise peaceful country. Fight it out yes, but let us respect national interests. And it is my humble deposition that NATIONAL INTERESTS need to be defined. And guess what, it does not take a genius to know that national interests, when all is said and done, must surely repose in a professional SECURITY corps who are sober and unexcitabe. So far so good in that regard, but the lines must be drawn so that all players know the rules. Vanongoonyoka zvine potential yekurunzira kusagadzikana pakati pemarudzi ini ndaramba. And I believe I speak for a lot of other sober Zimbabweans. Thank you Mr Editor. Every Zimbabwean voice counts. Otherwise listening to the converted is probably what has landed us in this current jam. Take my idea even if i may not be always palatable to you. Siyabonga
