to complete crafting its master plan that will finally pave the way for construction of a new university campus near the Great Zimbabwe monuments.
GZU has been using learning facilities from Masvingo Teachers’ College and Masvingo Polytechnic, as the university is yet to build its own structures.
The university was allocated land to build its campus near the monuments about 25 kilometres south of the country’s oldest city.
Construction of the university’s new campus has failed to commence over the past three years due to lack of funds to complete the crafting of a master plan that will be used to mobilise funds.
GZU Vice Chancellor Professor Obert Maravanyika confirmed the release of US$3,2 million by Government to complete the university master plan.
“We are now in the process of completing the crafting of the new university master plan after Government released some money to us. We are very grateful about that development because we are racing against time to complete the university master plan so that we can start mobilisation of resources to start the actual construction work at our new site near the Great Zimbabwe monuments,” said Prof Maravanyika.
He added that once the master plan was completed construction work would start if funds available.
Prof Maravanyika pointed out that currently the institution was grappling with shortage of learning space, which has resulted in students at the university learning at various locations throughout Masvingo city.
He said the university was working round the clock to make sure that construction of the Physics and Fine Arts blocks currently underway near the Masvingo Teachers’ College was expedited as the two blocks will increase the surface area of learning space at the institution.
President Mugabe presided over the ground-breaking ceremony at the proposed site for the university near the Great Zimbabwe monuments during the institution’s inaugural graduation ceremony in 2007.
