WELLINGTON Varevi won the inaugural Old Mutual Chitungwiza 10km Fun Run at Chitungwiza Town Centre on Sunday. The 21-year-old Black Rhinos athlete clocked 29 minutes 12 seconds and managed to beat several seasoned athletes as he powered to victory. Varevi, who had Lewis Masunda behind him, took off with 100 metres to go to cross the finish line first.

Varevi said he was happy with the win and is now aiming to win the upcoming Westgate half-marathon.

“I am happy that I have managed to win the race. It was tight but I managed to go all the way.

“The race was tough and I powered through with a few metres to go after I missed out at the Tanganda event.

“I started winning several events while I was still at school at Mapanzure Secondary School in Masvingo until I broke into the national team. I used to run short distances but later on changed to middle-distance races and 10km is now my specialty.”

Varevi took the lead from the onset to surrender it at 7km peg with Masunda overtaking him and it was at the 9km peg that he regained his lead until the finish line.

Kelvin Pangiso was third in 29 minutes 23 seconds while Point Chaza (29 minutes 28 seconds) and Robson Chigara took the next two places.

Seasoned female road runner Rutendo Nyahora managed to win the women’s 10km race, beating Patience Garauzive of Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services.

Nyahora finished the race in 34 minutes 07 seconds as Garauzive came second in was 35 minutes 04 seconds.

Faith Nyasango was third in the women race on 35 minutes 11 seconds. Thandiwe Nyathi (35 minutes 26 seconds) and Fortunate Chidzivo came fourth and fifth.

In the 5km race, Amos Chedondo of the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services won the event with Muchaneta Tembo coming second.

Old Mutual properties managing director Marjorie Mayida said the race went on well and thanked all the athletes who took part in it.

“We are happy that the event it went on very well and we thank all the athletes who took part in it and they should keep on supporting us in future,” Mayida said.
