GIRLS schools champions Vainona started their campaign at the Dairibord Schools Rugby Festival with a 36-0 mauling of George Stark at Prince Edward School yesterday, but their coach Shingirai Zhoya still feels they could have done better.

Zhoya said he was not impressed with his team’s performance despite their comprehensive win and demanded an improvement in their next assignment against Goromonzi High tomorrow at 10am.

Vainona scored their first try in the 10th minute through Tatenda Nhau, which was converted by Mercy Marowa and they led 17-0 by half-time.

Lorraine Kugayo, Betty Musendamidzi, Elizabeth Bvunzawabaya and Milanda Tinarwo also scored tries for Vainona.

“We started our festival with a win, yes, but the girls did not do well, there were a lot of mistakes and, as a coach, I can see that we need to improve,” said Zhoya.

“I believe if we go back and review the game tonight, we will be able to work on a number of areas as we have a big match waiting for us on Friday.

“The line-outs were not good enough, as well as support play, the passes also were not good, we were poor.

“Obviously, we are going to get a win against Goromonzi but we must not relax, we have to improve in each match we play to be a better team.”

In another match at the Jubilee Field, Girls High started the festival on a good note with a 29-0 destruction of Royal College.

Girls High were in full control and their first try came from Peace Sithole and Hazel Dube added the bonus points.

Korreen Muchabaiwa touched down and her twin sister Karen followed suit by adding another try.

Leanne Max and Kudzai Machawira were the players who touched down for Girls High.

Girls High coach, Abraham Rwodzi, who has been in charge of the team for four years, said he was proud of his team.

“Well played to the girls, it was good match, we have started the match on a good note and, hopefully, the girls will even do much better in the next fixture,” said Rwodzi.

Prince Edward School II beat Trust Academy 17-7.

Prince Edward’s eighthman Tinashe Murevi scored a brace of tries in the first half and one of them was converted by Timothy Mushawatu.

Trust Academy registered a converted try in the second half.

PE captain Luke Shonhiwa said it was a tense match.

“The scrums were a little messy, in the second half we improved and I hope we will be able to work on our scrums and other areas.

“Our next assignment will be against Eaglesvale second team and I believe they will not be a big problem for us and we can win again,” said Shonhiwa.
