Entertainment Reporter—
Attack Jazz Band, an Afro-jazz outfit, won this year’s Chibuku Road To Fame contest held over the weekend at Glamis Stadium. The group, which hails from Mashonaland West, shrugged off stiff competition from other nine groups from different provinces. Sungura dominated at the festival and the results could suggest that the genre is losing its grip on the music scene.

There were five sungura groups, three Afro-jazz groups, one masgandi and one passade/rhumba group.
Attack Jazz Band took home the ultimate prize of US$5 000 while second-placed Talent Fall Band, a passade/rhumba group, won US$4 000 followed by Facebook Brothers, a sungura outfit, that took home US$3 000 for coming third.

For the greater part of the afternoon it was clear that sungura had lost its appeal as the huge crowd that turned up for the show was not so keen about the contesting groups. Rather, the crowd went wild whenever a dance-hall tune was played during intervals.

However, the show continued with lots of prizes and give-aways as well as cash draws for lucky customers. The groups that competed had a feel of how it is to perform before huge crowds and international stage designed by StageCon.

That is the magic of the Chibuku Road To Fame, where music and drink is part of the entertainment.
Last year, the winners of the Chibuku Road to Fame were Bindura based outfit The Way Band, who followed in the footsteps of Terry and the Bliss, 2012 winners who broke into the sungura stronghold with fresh contemporary jazz-inspired sounds.

The 2013 edition was also graced by a surprise appearance by the Malawi Chibuku Road to Fame edition winners. Chibuku Road to Fame is one of the three largest musical festivals in the country, and is the single largest talent identification programme in Zimbabwe in terms of scale and in terms of depth.

It is hosted by Delta Beverages in partnership with the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe.
“Delta Beverages remains one of the largest supporters of the arts in the country, and it continues to deliver,” Delta Beverages marketing manager Patricia Murambinda said.
Founded in 2001, the Chibuku Road to Fame has respectively grown to critical acclaim, and now boasts some of the most valuable entertainment franchises on the local arts front.

The Chibuku Road to Fame has now been expanded to Botswana and Malawi with Zambia expected to launch the programme in the next two years.
