Unlicensed guns land pair in trouble

TWO Harare men have been arrested after they were found in possession of two unlicensed machine guns hidden underground at a house in Mt Hampden. The law prohibits civilians from owning automatic weapons or machines guns. Simbarashe Chinopopota (19) of Beta Bricks compound, Mt Hampden, and Progress Simbarashe Musarurwa (25) of plot 125, Donfontein, Nyabira, were allegedly seen by neighbours carrying a sack containing the prohibited firearms.

The pair appeared before magistrate Mr Milton Serima yesterday. They are facing charges of possessing dangerous weapons. Mr Serima deferred the matter to today.

Prosecutor Miss Sharon Mashavira opposed bail.

The State alleges that on December 16, the pair was found in possession of two machines guns serial numbers MB 1146 and MB 1224.

Marlborough police received a tip off that Chinopopota and Musarurwa were hiding machine guns at their house and they reacted swiftly.

Musarurwa and Chinonopota failed to explain why they were in possession of the weapons leading to their arrest. Meanwhile, a 32-year-old police officer stationed at ZRP Braeside also appeared in court yesterday charged with raping a house maid. Mr Serima remanded Chinoruma to January 8 on US$50 bail.
