TENNIS Zimbabwe president Regis Bhunu say their emphasis is on development as they host two International Tennis Federation Futures events starting on Monday at Harare Sports Club.
The first event, starting on Monday, is being sponsored by Twenty Third Century Systems and will end on October 19.

The second competition is sponsored by NetOne runs from October 20 to 25.

Speaking at a media briefing at Harare Sports Club, yesterday, Bhunu said the tournaments were meant to complement international junior tournaments the nation hosts.

“TZ has included both futures to expose our junior players to highly competitive tennis. The tournaments are meant to complement our junior development policy.

“We host a lot of international junior tournaments in this country, we felt that it was important that we complement it with a seniors’ tournament and it’s our wish that every year we have to host at least two futures tournaments.

“If sponsors are going to come we will be ready to play futures tournaments in this county because we feel there should be a bridging gap between the juniors tournaments and senior tournaments.”

This is the second time that the Twenty Third Century Systems are sponsoring a futures event and their chief sales officer, Eugene Muzvidziwa, said they were delighted to be part of this year’s tournaments.

“As Twenty Third Century Systems we are very proud to be associated with Tennis Zimbabwe, more so to have reignited our romance, so to speak, in terms of sponsoring the ITF Futures tournaments.

“We believe this is great starting point, as an organisation we are convinced, there is no doubt in our minds that tennis is the way go, is the right sport to be sponsoring at this stage,” said Muzvidziwa.

NetOne marketing sales director, Memory Ndoro-Mandiya, said they have come a long way in their partnership with the national tennis association.

“With Tennis Zimbabwe we have a long history in terms of putting up this. NetOne has always aimed at providing an enabling environment for the development of tennis and as a corporate organisation we are actually very serious about tennis in Zimbabwe.

“Sport is a big industry on its own, which again should not be underestimated, it brings a lot of other related benefits and we should not underrate the talent people have in sport,” Ndoro-Mandiya.

Zimbabwe will at least have five players in the main draw led by Mark Fynn who automatically qualified for the draw.

The other four players, Martin Dzuwa, Tinotenda Chanakira, Miracle Matanga and Tinashe Chikanda, got wildcards and will now start from the main draw.

Fynn said he has had good preparations.

“The preparations have been very good I mean, we got promotion in the Davis Cup which is a very big moment for all of us.

“After that I had three weeks training in Istanbul in Turkey, which has been going very well.”

The occasion was graced by TZ life honorary vice president Albert Nhamoyebonde.
