Two nabbed for possessing zebra hides

The two were arrested at a road block in West Nicholson after police had received a tip-off that the bus they were travelling in had zebra skins.

Ndodana Moyo (39), of 3291 Cowdray Park was implicated by his relative Khulekani Nyoni (37), of Number 5/177 Mpopoma who had sold two zebra
skins to him.

Moyo was convicted on his own plea for contravening Section 74(1) as read with Section 74 (3) of the Parks and Wildlife Act, Chapter 20:14
(purchase of animal trophy without permit) and was sentenced to 158 days in prison or alternatively pay a US$300 fine.

Nyoni was also convicted on his own plea for contravening Section 59(3) as read with Section 59 (5) of the Parks and Wildlife Act, Chapter 20:14 (Selling of trophy without a licence) and was sentenced to 128 days in prison or alternatively pay a US$200 fine.

The zebra skins were forfeited to the State.
The State case as presented by  Mr Philip Ruzoza is that on 20 January this year, detectives received a tip-off that a Beitbridge- bound bus was carrying zebra skins.

West Nicholson police were alerted and
mounted a road block on the highway.
Mr Ruzoza said police managed to stop the bus that Nyoni and Moyo had boarded and 21 zebra skins were recovered after the bus driver had indicated that one of the customers had a luggage of sealed cattle
hides of which he had been misinformed.

The recovered zebra skins are valued at US$5250.
Mr Ruzoza also told the court that Nyoni met Moyo in Gwanda town where he sold him two skins for US$400. The two were immediately arrested and the skins were kept by the police.
