Two people were killed, while three others were seriously injured in separate accidents along the Beitbridge-Masvingo Highway on Sunday. In the first accident, which occurred 90km out of Beitbridge Town soon after midday involving a Jeep Cherokee, the driver travelling towards Masvingo lost control after crossing Bubi River following a mechanical fault.

According to sources, the car then veered off the road and over turned.
“One person died on the spot while two others were seriously injured. They were all taken to Beitbridge Hospital and mortuary respectively,” they said. In another accident, according to police spokesperson for Matabeleland South, Inspector Philisani Ndebele, Tinashe Kolosi (25) died after his vehicle was side-swiped near Chicago Business Centre around 9pm, some 10km north of Beitbridge town. Inspector Ndebele said: “Indications are that Kolosi’s Golf 5 was travelling towards Beitbridge with two people on board including the driver.

“A South African registered Toyota pickup truck was heading to the opposite direction and on reaching the 273km peg — near Chicago Business Centre — Kolosi encroached into the lane of oncoming traffic and the vehicles side swiped,” he said. Insp Ndebele said Kolosi’s vehicle veered off the road and overturned once before landing on its right side killing him instantly. The driver of the Toyota and two passengers from each vehicle sustained serious injuries.

“Investigations are still in progress. At the same time we urge motorists to always abide by road traffic regulations to avoid the unnecessary loss of lives,” Insp Ncube said.
