Two people were killed while 16 others were injured in a road traffic accident yesterday when a Toyota Quantum they were travelling in was involved in a head-on collision with a haulage truck along Chitungwiza Road. The two died on admission to Harare and Parirenyatwa Central hospitals. The injured were taken to Chitungwiza Central Hospital, while those critically injured were admitted at Parirenyatwa and Harare Central Hospitals.The 27-year-old kombi driver survived the accident.

Witnesses said the commuter omnibus driver miscalculated the overtaking distance, resulting in the head-on collision.

Instead of returning to the left lane, the driver tried to swerve to the far right resulting in the collision.

Police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba confirmed the incident.

“I can confirm that the accident did occur and two people died on arrival at hospital(s). The driver of the Toyota Quantum was trying to overtake four vehicles and when the driver of the haulage truck travelling in the opposite direction noticed that the commuter omnibus was not going to make it back into the correct lane, he tried to avoid hitting it, and swerved to his far left. The driver of the Quantum also swerved his vehicle to the far right resulting in a head on- collision,” she said.

Police have always urged motorists to observe road traffic regulations.

Speeding, human error, lack of judgment, overloading and defective vehicles are some of the major causes road traffic accidents.
