Twenty foreign students deported

Crime Reporter
POLICE in Harare and Mutare have arrested 20 foreign students for illegally staying and studying in the country.

They are from Angola, Mozambique and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

This followed an operation by police that included the Department of Immigration.

They have since been deported to their countries.

Assistant Regional Immigration Officer in charge of Compliance and Enforcement Mr Francis Mabika last week said they were carrying out a countrywide crackdown on illegal immigrants.

It is understood that of the 20 students, seven were arrested at City Study Centre in Harare and the remainder at Davewell Institution in Mutare.

Those arrested in Harare were identified as Fransisco Romeu Teixera, Katito Justino, Gomes Maria Lucuiano, all from Angola and Katota Kayombo Stenor, Aristide Kantenga Benjamin, Somp Mutund Ruth and Katengo Kuzang Grace from Democratic Republic of Congo.

Sources said the students came in the country as visitors. They were mainly studying languages.

They would exit the country on noticing their visitors’ permit was about to expire before obtaining new visitors’ permits rather than study permits.
