TSHOLOTSHO goalkeeper Chang Mariyoni — who traces his roots to Sakubva in Mutare — is convinced his club will once again beat the relegation threat and survive to play another year in the Premiership.

The 24-year-old Mariyoni might have conceded the second highest number of goals in the current championship race so far but he is certainly not to blame for that given he has been impressive in a struggling side.

Mariyoni, who attended Elise Gladhil Primary before moving to Mutare Boys High, is one of the few survivors from a Tsholotsho side that underwent an overhaul early this season.

The former Mutare United, Kiglon Bird and Inyangani FC ‘keeper said Tsholotsho’s performances have been improving despite his side failing to win a single game this season.

The Tsholotsho captain said they are also banking on the slender gap between them and the teams lying above them on the table.

He believes the next five league matches will provide them with a clear picture.

“We are aware that we are real in danger of getting relegated and we have been through that before. We have survived on the last day of the season before and we know how strenuous it is,’’ he said.

“However, I strongly believe that we can still do it this season.

“Yes, we have not won a single match and the odds are heavily staked against us but the gap between us and those lying above us is not that big and it gives us hope that it is not over until its over.

“If you also look at the log closely you will realise that about eight teams are also in danger of getting relegated and therefore it is too early to write us off.

“I think it will all be clear in the next five matches. That is when we can surrender or prove our critics wrong.’’

Tsholotsho have perfected the art of beating the relegation threat and have done so at the expense of Mutare side.

The 31 goals they have conceded in the championship race is the second highest number of goals conceded in the marathon. Bantu Rovers have conceded 40 goals so far this season.

The team has scored a paltry 10 goals in those 21 matches.
