SILVER SCREEN WITH TAFADZWA ZIMOYO
Welcome to June – the month of leaves and roses, when pleasant sights salute the eyes and pleasant scents the noses.

Trust that you had a lovely weekend, especially some quality programming.

On Saturday, I had a chance to meet BET (Black Entertainment Television) head consultancy, South African radio and television personality Kgomotso Matsunyane, who was on a two-day trip ahead of Vault Cosmetics launch at Barbours Stores.

I had a chat with her, to understand what her job entails and she said it is about making sure that all African countries have content that is screened on the channel.

I then asked her what she thinks of our Zimbabwean content and she said that she has not seen any of late but remembers how talented we are because she was groomed by Rumbidzai Katedza during their show Wise Up.

Which is an indictment of local productions. Of late, MultiChoice Zimbabwe has been calling for local content and it’s a now a month down the line.

Close sources revealed that few local producers have come to the party with some actually approaching MultiChoice to commission their visions yet the call clearly stated that only finished products would be considered. Rumour has it that DStv wants to create a channel for Zimbabwe dubbed Zambezi TV. We wonder what they would fill it with at this rate. Where are you local producers? Stop being part of the problem and be the solution. Do not tell us about your challenges. Show us your star quality by overcoming them.

This week, all focus is on BET.

By now you must have heard the exciting news of the new channel, BET heading to DStv. BET which is on channel 129 on DStv Premium and will co-exist alongside BET2 (formerly BET International) which currently airs on DStv channel 135. So far, you can expect a blend of both South African and internationally produced shows on BET that will have you glued to your television screens. My pick of the week include “Top Actor”, a brand new African reality series premièring that will give you a glance into the world of acting.

“Top Actor” will be hosted by South African film and television star Zikhona Sodlaka and sees 12 of the best up and coming actors battle it out on camera to be named the “Top Actor”.

Living under the same roof, we can only expect tension as the 12 hopefuls compete on both TV and film sets to be the last one standing. Expect an elimination each week as the show narrows it down to see who will become the ultimate actor of them all.

Still on that, again this month is when the most talked and loved awards show happen. The BET Awards are scheduled to take place on June 27 at Los Angeles, USA.

American of Zimbabwean descent Tinashe is there on the list of performers who include Mr Vegas, Nicki Minaj, Rae Sremmurd, Kevin Hart, Ne-Yo and DeJ Loaf among others.

The awards show will be aired on channel 129 with repeats following later on days to be advised.

Meanwhile, the action continues on SuperSport channels as tonight’s Cuba vs NY Cosmos, The Dawn of a New Era screened live on DStv’s SuperSport

After more than 50 years of hostilities, Cuba and the USA’s fractured relationship is well and truly on the mend.

Proof of this will be evident tonight from 10.45 on SuperSport 3 HD when the New York Cosmos become the first professional American sports team to play a match on the island in over 15 years.

Cosmos, the former side of one of Africa’s top players, Jomo Sono from South Africa, and Brazilian legend Pele, will play the Lions of the Caribbean in an exhibition match as part of ongoing efforts initiated by the two countries’ presidents to heal the longstanding political rift.
