ZIMBABWE’S Micheen “Mouse” Thornycroft will compete in her first A/B semi-final slot at the ongoing World Rowing Championships in France this morning.

Thornycroft will begin the semi-final at 11:19am against competitors from Austria, Ireland, Czech Republic, China and the United States.

The Zimbabwean managed to book a place in the semis on Tuesday after she came third in her quarter-final.

In what turned out to be an extremely close race, Mouse thrilled the Zimbabwean rowing community, who were glued to their computer screens to listen to live commentary, with her performance.

After lying fourth for more than three quarters of the two-kilometre race, she surged into third place just before the finish line, and in so doing knocked the rower from New Zealand into fourth place, by a slender margin.

Thornycroft had to be placed in the first three to progress through to the A/B semi-finals.

First place in the race went to Tatsiana Kukhta of Belarus and second was Sanita Puspure of Ireland.

Coming outside the top three will earn Thornycroft a spot in the B final. The coaching she is receiving in South Africa is obviously what she needed to be able to achieve such amazing feats.

Her results so far are a source of great pride to the Zimbabwean Rowing Association.
