It is said yesterday is history, today is a gift and tomorrow is a mystery.

The happenings of yesterday in the life of every student shapes the position one is holding today, in other words today was planned yesterday.

In most cases as students, we tend to worry about a lot of what is happening today so much that our future beyond high school is left unattended and dangerously unplanned.

If today is a gift, it is time to live in the moment knowing that to be where one is, something happened in the past.

In the same vein, if tomorrow is a mystery, it is also a golden chance for all studying for their Ordinary and Advanced Level exams to properly reposition themselves and shape their destiny.

A great student is not one that scores distinctions in almost every exam to the satisfaction of both teachers and parents, but one that knows how these distinctions will translate to their tomorrow.

Each time we hitch hike to school, or walk that agonising distance in the grips of intense coldness, we need to shove visions in our satchels as much as we shove the books. To study with a focus means one is thinking beyond, and this involves knowing who you want to be at a certain point.

What it implies then is, every student has the obligation to carefully choose those Ordinary Level subjects which will make it possible to have the right Advanced Level combination which will unquestionably link to what one wishes to study at university.

In the process of studying for one’s exams it is further imperative to do an in-depth research of the career one wishes to tackle. This will help in giving one knowledge about its prerequisites, what it involves and the challenges one may meet along the way.

Every Advanced Level student wishes to one day attain a degree and this means having to go through university life. If this is the wish, so what are we waiting for?

If every university is open to both studying and aspiring students, then this is the time also to visit them, tour the campuses at appropriate times, and have a feel of the university or college atmosphere. Planning for your life after high school is like playing chess and you just need to move your pieces carefully no matter the odds. Advanced Level studies a place for the academically matured, those who envision life beyond and take the initiative to protract it within a space of two years. As such it must not be a comfort zone in which one enjoys the prestige that comes with that status to the point of the ignorance of the fact that after all it is just a short time in which to prepare a life career. University is in many ways different from the high school environs dominated by strict rules and prefects monitoring movements.

It is a place for the matured, those who can handle themselves better than anyone and as such it is not surprising that a university may have a hotel of its own and a beer hall with banks and the like.

This is a place where security officers replace prefects and any misbehaviour may prompt authorities to hand over culprits to the police.

As scary as it might seem to students still in high school, this is not to mean that the life beyond is not interesting, indeed it is. Enjoying university life is a choice that rests on one’s personal conduct, and one has to check his or her behaviour since this will determine the success of your vision. After all, what makes one a great worker is not only in how well versed one might be with the technicalities of the field, but one’s attitude to the

work. Your respect to authority and

willingness to learn while working is what makes you reap well out of your career.

So, as you will be on your way to school this coming Monday, ask yourself: “Have I packed a vision in my satchel together with the books?”
