A security guard manning a Government building was in the habit of breaking into offices during the night and stealing valuables, fuel coupons and cash, the court heard yesterday.
Tafadzwa Chiwanza (40), who is employed by Evershell Security Company, was deployed at the Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing at Makombe Building.

Chiwanza would break in and steal whatever people would have left in their offices including shoes, jackets and cash.

He was yesterday arraigned before Harare magistrate, Mr Milton Serima, charged with unlawful entry into premises in aggravating circumstances.

Mr Serima remanded him in custody to Monday next week for a possible plea recording since he is not denying the charges against him.

Prosecutor, Miss Sharon Mashavira, told the court that on July 30 this year, one of the complainants (name not supplied), left $1 700 in cash and 700 litres worth of fuel coupons in her office drawer when she went home.

When she reported for duty the following morning, the complainant could not find her money and the fuel coupons.

Another complainant also discovered that her shoes and jacket she had left in her office were missing.

They made a police report and, following a tip off, police raided Chiwanza’s Eastview home.

They recovered several goods from his house that included nine pairs of shoes, two video cameras, deodorants and jackets.

Chiwanza confessed to stealing the goods from various offices at the complex.

He also admitted that he had stolen the cash and fuel coupons, and that he had sold the coupons to commuter omnibus drivers.
