The Way Sounds wins Chibuku show

Mashonaland Central-based group The Way Sounds are this year’s winners of the Chibuku Road to Fame finals held on Saturday at Glamis Arena in Harare.The group outperformed other nine groups to walk away with US$5 000 prize money and a paid recording contract courtesy of Delta Beverages.

Mashonaland West group Human Life came second while Harare afro-fusion group, Were Sounds, settled for third place and for their effort pocketed US$4 000 and US$3 000 respectively.

The Way Sounds lead vocalist Nathan Mondoka was ecstatic about the group’s performance.
“When I formed the group in 2008, I never thought that I will ever win the prestigious prize,” said Mondoka.

“Our priority is to record and stage shows frequently. We have been performing as an opening act for established musicians in Bindura.”
While the winning groups basked in the glory of their triumph, it was the fans who enjoyed more as they had the opportunity to see established musicians such Alick Macheso, Romeo Gasa, Jah Prayzah and Winky D in action all for free.

The performing artistes did not disappoint as they gave top-drawer perfomances. Revellers started arriving as early as 10am.  The Way Sounds join the elite league of previous Chibuku Road to Fame winners in the mould of Romeo Gasa (2007), Club Shanga (2010), Munandi Express (2011) and Terry and the Bliss (2012) among others.

These artistes have become established musicians in their own right, courtesy of the competition. Chibuku Road to Fame is Zimbabwe’s biggest and most successful talent search platform.

The programme is a collaborative effort between Delta Bevarages and the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe. Its major objectives are to promote the development of musical groups through identifying groups with potential to produce recordable material and assist winning groups in documenting their work.

The initiative has benefited a number of young musicians countrywide. Many young and upcoming musicians regard this programme as the first step to stardom. They enter the competition with the hope that one day they will
