It was a sporting extravaganza this week when more than 1 500 students from 13 schools in the Glen View-Mufakose district converged at Eaglesvale Senior School in Harare for the interschools athletics competition. Eaglesvale came out as the winners for the day with Glen View 1 High School in second position followed by Mufakose 2 High School.

The event also saw the selection of a team that will compete at the inter-district competition on March 6. Each school brought a team of 120 athletes that contested in 122 events which demonstrated a high level of competitiveness with some displaying their prowess in the track and field events.

Tendai Mukwate “Chidhinha” from Mufakose 2 High School was popular with the crowd and displayed spectacular performances as he continuously dominated and outpaced his peers in most of the long distance events.

Other students who were popular with the crowd were Geshom Sabri, Robin Chitsato and Tinodaishe Mupudzi, all from Eaglesvale.

The track and field events included athletics, high jump, long jump, triple jump, javelin, short put, discus, hurdles, hammer throw and relay.

After the district competitions Harare will select a provincial team from the winners that will go for the national competition to be hosted by South Eastern College in Chiredzi between March 19 and 20.

Glen View-Mufakose district are hoping to retain the winner’s title that they won in last year’s Harare inter-district competition.

Eaglesvale senior school headmaster who is in charge of the district competition, Mr Naison Tirivavi said “this year’s selection is based on standard time because we are hoping to select the best team”.
