The Herald has reaffirmed its dominance as Zimbabwe’s number one newspaper after scooping yet again the prestigious Superbrand of the Year 2014 award in the print media category yesterday.

The Herald has come out tops since the awards were first launched in 2009.

The Herald Editor Caesar Zvayi, who received the award at a glittering event held at a local hotel, thanked his staff, readers and advertisers for the continued dominance of the paper.

“When you have a situation where the word newspaper is synonymous with your product, you can’t help but say there are ‘two’ newspapers in Zimbabwe, The Herald and others,’’ he said.

The special recognition of The Herald’s brand strength came on the back of another splendid annual performance after the newspaper was also recognised as the most preferred daily by the Zimbabwe All Media Products Survey 2014.

The Herald falls under the Zimbabwe stock exchange-listed Zimpapers Limited (1980) that publishes a host of titles in addition to running a vibrant radio station and with plans to launch a television channel soon.

ZiFm was adjudged the Superbrand of the year electronic media category, while Econet Wireless retained the overall Business Award as well as triumphing in the Telecommunications category.

Schweppes Zimbabwe was number one in the beverages through its Mazowe Orange Crush offering in the non-alcoholic beverages category.

Platinum miner, Zimplats, was the sectoral winner in the mining sector, coming out tops ahead of Mimosa Mine and Mbada Diamonds.

Industry and Commerce Minister Mike Bimha, who was the guest of honour at the 2014 Superbrand awards ceremony, hailed the Superbrand awards as a platform for creating competitiveness among different players in the industry.

He said companies should take advantage of the platform to create competitive products that have an edge to compete on the export market.

“I am quite thrilled by the initiative rolled out by MAZ to reward companies of their hard work in creating competitive products. The platform forces companies to fight and at the end of the day the customer will be the judge.

“There is need for companies to make an impact on the global market and of late the downfall of many companies in the country has been due to lack of recognition,” said Minister Bimha.

Marketers Association of Zimbabwe president Mr Tapuwa Mandimutsira said hard work among companies always call for a reward and the awards for 2015 will be bigger and better.

He encouraged companies to embrace innovation and technology to grow their businesses to meet the global market dynamics.

“The Superbrand concept is meant to promote the discipline of branding in the country as selected by consumers and industry experts.

“It aims to identify those brands that are performing above and beyond others within the market. It identifies and pays tribute to exceptional brands by recognising, rewarding, and reinforcing leading brands, be they local or international brands,” said Mr Mandimutsira
