The state-owned fixed line telephone operator, TelOne has broadened its product offering by venturing into the wireless business as it seeks to keep pace with technological advancements.

TelOne recently officially announced the new fixed mobile conversion, which they will be rolling out countrywide.

The company has already established several hotspots in Harare, Bulawayo and Victoria Falls. These have already become a hit with internet users.

TelOne’s major advantage has been on pricing as internet users are paying $1 per 100mb the mobile Wi-Fi hotspots, making it the most affordable Internet Service provider in the country.

The company has also been innovative by engaging street vendors to sell their airtime top-ups since they are closer to the hotspots, which brings convenience to their customers.

In Harare TelOne has established hot spots with good coverage over Harare Glass House, Amtec, Road port, Daventry House, Cleveland House Mupedzanhamo, Kamfinsa shopping Centre, Makombe Passport Offices, Africa Unity Square, Montagu, TelOne Centre for Learning, TelOne Borrowdale, TelOne Exhibition Park, TelOne Joina City, Runhare House, TelOne Glen View Exchange,

Chitungwiza Shopping Centre is the only small town that has been fortunate to have a hotspot, which is available at the new state of the art TelOne office that was unveiled last year.

In Bulawayo, their Wi-Fi Zones are covering ZITF Grounds, Entumbane Shopping Mall, Munyoro Shops, Nkulumane Exchange, and TelOne Main Exchange Main Street.

The resort town of Victoria Falls has also a good coverage at Elephant Hills, Victoria Falls Business Centre, Chinotimba Post Office, Victoria Falls border Post, Victoria Falls Airport, TelOne Victoria Falls Exchange

The TelOne Wi-Fi hotspots push out the data through their last mile fibre optic or ADSL for real time online connectivity.

It still remains to be seen how robust and stable the network will be, as the subscriber base grows.

Our recent tests on the service, however, proved that its way faster, with relatively little to no latency, providing real convenience on demand.

However, the fixed hotspot business is not new in Zimbabwe, ZOL Zimbabwe for a long time have been offering the same service on a free minutes trial basis, a service they recently started charging for.

Wi-fi hotspots basically cover busy or strategic spots, to provide wireless connectivity from fixed terminals where subscribers can easily connect without using their mobile data.
