Teen’s American dream shattered

Court Reporter
A HARARE teenager forged her Ordinary Level results in a bid to secure a place at an American university. Alice Shupikai Kwenda (18) appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Elijah Makomo on Wednesday and pleaded guilty to contravening the Zimbabwe Schools Examination Act. Kwenda’s dream to study in the United States was foiled when its Embassy in Harare discovered the results were forged.

Mr Makomo warned and cautioned Kwenda before discharging her.

The complainant was the University of Zimbabwe represented by its assistant security officer Ms Prisca Maredza.

According to the prosecutor Ms Francisca Mukumbiri, Kwenda applied for a degree in Business Administration and Management on August 17 at an undisclosed American university.

She was invited to the American Embassy to tender her Ordinary Level certificate.

Kwenda tendered a certificate serial number 2992814 with seven passes.

The certificate indicated that she sat for her examination at Nashville High School in November 2013.

The American Embassy authorities sent the certificate to Zimsec for verification.

It was established that Kwenda did not sit for O-Level examinations at the said school.

She was subsequently arrested.
