TEAM Zimbabwe for the 2016 Homeless World Cup football tournament to be held in Glasgow, Scotland, next month successfully held their fundraising dinner dance at Crowne Plaza Monomotapa on Thursday night. The event managed to raise $6 000 after some corporates and individuals made pledges for the team to successfully attend the tournament. Despite managing to raise the $6 000, the funds are still falling short as they are targeting $20 000 for the whole trip to Scotland.

The 2016 Homeless World Cup tournament will run from July 10-16 and Team Zimbabwe feel they might be running out of time to raise the required funds to travel to Scotland but they remain optimistic.

Tendai “T-Buns” Zhakata, the team manager, said they were grateful for the support they received but are still $14 000 short.

“We are very happy that we managed to hold a successful fundraising dinner dance, which is aimed at helping the team to travel to Scotland for the tournament.

“Everything went according to plan but we are still looking forward to some individuals and corporates coming on board as we are now 40 percent ready.

“So far we have managed to secure air tickets that will take the team to Johannesburg and we are still looking for more funds.

“Many corporates and individuals, who include Air Zimbabwe, Nyaradzo, Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board, Premier Tobacco, NetOne, UFIC, PP Cement and Spoken Word Ministries among several others, managed to come on board,” said Zhakata.

The Homeless World Cup project coordinator in Zimbabwe, Petros Chatiza, also said they are happy with the progress they have made so far.

“We are on the right track and we cannot panic as yet but just to appeal to the corporate world to help this noble cause.

“We are hopeful that we will manage everything in time for the tournament,” added Chatiza.

The event was graced by Harare Provincial Affairs Minister, Miriam Chikukwa, who was the guest of honour, and she also encouraged individuals and corporates to support Team Zimbabwe.
