A Chitungwiza woman assaulted police officers at court yesterday for trying to re-arrest her son who was wanted for theft. The woman (name not given) had accompanied her son, Collen Makani (32), to court in a matter in which he is jointly charged with Lovemore Makununike (31). After the duo were remanded to October 10 and on their way out, Makani was confronted by a Constable Chikomo who wanted to arrest him for stealing asbestos sheets.
When Cst Chikono apprehended and tried to handcuff Makani, his mother pro- tested.

She started calling for Chitungwiza resident magistrate Mr Donald Ndirowei, who was in a court session, to come and witness the drama.
And in a fit of rage, she charged towards Cst Chikomo, slapping her. She tore the constable’s uniform as her son and Makununike wrestled other police officers.
Within minutes, a crowd had swelled to observe what was happening.

Officers in the courtroom came out to disperse the crowd.
Two more officers, including a Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services officer, came to wrestle with the angry woman before whisking her away to the nearby police post.
Makani and his co-accused were also taken to the police post where chaos escalated with Makununike fighting to get out of the room.

He broke door handles of the police post as officers tried to handcuff him.
The woman, who was handcuffed with her son and Makununike, bolted out of the police post heading into the court room seeking recourse.
