Nine suspected armed robbers appeared in court on Monday facing charges of stealing property worth $70 000. Ephraim Malcom Matiza (22), Trust Misola (27), Craig Musasa (27), Taurai Fagai (24), Roy Mafunga (27), Robson Pangai (27), Mustapha Ngunda (36), Jonathan Muala (31) and Jonathan Muchemwa (31) appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Milton Serima facing armed robbery charges.

They were remanded in custody to December 8.

Mr Serima advised them to apply for bail at the High Court.

Two of the suspected robbers, Fagai and Muala, told the court that their gun wounds were getting septic after failing to get medical attention. They denied fleeing from the police claiming they were shot while lying down.

“We were ordered to lie down and we were shot. We have not been treated despite the pain we are enduring. The wounds are getting septic,” they said.

Mr Serima said the pair should be given medical attention.

The prosecutor Mr Sebastian Mutizirwa alleged that on October 12 this year at Rockview Park in Ruwa, the nine manhandled a gardener and blindfolded him.

They forced open the kitchen door and stole a safe containing US$30 000.

They also took a laptop and Stanbic cheque books and sped away in a Toyota Chaser.

On November 6, the gang proceeded to number 58 Gaydon Road, Greystone Park, in Harare, armed with a revolver.

They scaled a precast wall and threatened the housemaid Charity Mwadzura, demanding to know the whereabouts of Mr Bi Heyan.

The gang tied Mr Heyan with a cable and ransacked the house. They stole valuables before disappearing.

Eight days later they went to number 537 Damba Road in Ruwa and stole US$39 000, Noricho pistol, a CCTV decoder, four laptops several clothes and mobile phones belonging to Graceb Investments. They allegedly fled in company vehicles, a grey Honda CRV registration number ACA 9323, and a silver Nissan Gloria registration ACV 6755.

They were later confronted by police and exchanged fire. Fagai was shot on the right thigh and Muala on the right ankle. Detectives recovered three firearms and ammunition.
