Female students in higher and tertiary institutions have been urged to desist from the “thigh for a pass” culture to enhance the quality of their education and contribution to national development.

Female Students Network (FSN) gender rights activist Ms Evernice Munando told students at Solusi University recently that engaging in “sex for a pass” had severe implications on the status and quality of education for female students.

“A number of female students in tertiary institutions in Zimbabwe are exchanging their bodies for grades.

“Lecturers and even classmates are getting favours in exchange of grades,” she said.

“If this goes on, this will affect the standard of education for female students and their overall contribution to the economy.

“If you do not have a solid pass based on merit, you may eventually fail in the job market. This might also affect women’s contribution to the economy.”

Reports are widespread that some corrupt lecturers were offering pass marks for sex as they exploit the vulnerability of female students desperate to sail through university.

“The country needs educated women but if you do not work for your grade you will not be able to contribute to the economic growth of the country,” Ms Munando said.

“Females are dressing wildly to entice lecturers for grades and their classmates for assignments, please let us strive to work hard to earn our grades. Lets avoid to entice our lecturers and other influential men in our institutions.”

Some analysts say female students in full-time education are at higher risk of sexual violence than the general female population as they are not aware of any codes of conduct implemented by their universities.
