STUART Krog and Kiren Vincent are expected to fly the country’s flag high once again as they began the first round of the Junior Orange Bowl International Golf tournament, at the Biltmore Golf Club, Coral Gables, on the outskirts of Miami, Florida United States on a bright note.

Chapman-based Krog carded a one-over-par to go into the second round tied on position 22 while Vincent was a single shot behind on two-under-par to tie on position 30.

The 51st edition of the event burst into life yesterday with the pair of Krog and Vincent being the country’s only representatives at the competition.

They were leading the local order of merit standings by the end of last season.

Former St Georges College student Krog and Vincent of St Johns’ were expected to rise their tempo when they went into late yesterday’s second round.

A total of four players travelled to United States with Mbongeni Maphosa and Tarisiro Fundira who played in their private capacity.

Maphosa and Fundira were not part of the Orange Bowl having only taken part in the American Junior Championship in which they finished tied on position 15, nine-over-par after the three rounds.

Krog on the other hand finished tied on position 25 while Fundira was tied on 36.

Zimbabwe last had Lewis Chitengwa winning the event back in 1992.

Belgium’s Giovanni Tadiotto and Chile’s Joaquin Niemann sprinted to the first round lead, tied at four-under par 67, closely followed by Argentina’s Alejandro Tosti and Czech Republic’s Vitek Nova’k on 68.

Past champions include major tournament winners Tiger Woods, José María Olazábal, Andy North, Craig Stadler, Mark Calcavecchia and Bob Tway.

Equally notable the list of 100-plus others who did not win the JOBI but went on to sterling professional golfing careers, a grouping that includes Gary Koch, Willie Wood, Dudley Hart, Billy Mayfair, Ryuji Imada, Matt Kuchar and Camilo Villegas, as well as three-time major champion Nick Price and Hal Sutton.
