The Chinhoyi family that was mysterious being stoned some few months ago is now grappling with strange manifestations of one of the daughters whenever she is touched by her two-year-old nephew. Shamiso Chiviru (19), who is the target of most of the attacks, collapses whenever she is touched by her sister’s two-year-old son. Strangely, it will take a prayer or touch of her own two-year-old son for her to get back to normal again.

The strange manifestations include visible movement of something in her belly. When The Herald visited the Chiviru home at House Number 4146A, Chikonohono suburb in Chinhoyi, things seemed normal, but soon changed when the boy tapped Shamiso’s shoulder. This prompted the sister Concilia into prayer while applying some “anointing oil” before she became normal again.

After a little while, as Concilia narrated the family’s ordeal, the boy again touched her and Shamiso just lay prostrate. They asked Shamiso’s son to pray and immediately she was back to normal. Concilia said stone attacks are now sparse unlike before when it used to be an almost every day occurrence. Faced by such strange occurrences, the family sought spiritual help, with some of their visits worsening the situation.

“Sometime in August we went to an apostolic sect shrine in Harare, where we were attacked, resulting in us regretting ever visiting the area,” said Concilia. Neighbours said they hear strange noises and because of the mysterious things at the house, they have not spoken to the family members for a long time.

“We hear strange noises like doors banging and because of that, we are afraid of also being attacked because one day we saw a man and woman we later learnt were elders at a local church running from the house,” said a neighbour. In one of the incidents, a person who had escorted this reporter, handed over a bottle of “anointing oil” when Shamiso was in a violent trance.

In a strange voice, she warned him of consequences because of his involvement. The manifestation, which sent shivers down everyone’s spine started with her bellowing in Shona that the family was busy discussing the supposed spirit with strangers. That phase of the manifestation was so violent that Shamiso’s mother and sister Concilia could not restrain her with all of us scurrying for cover.

Her mother, Mrs Tabitha Chiviru sustained visible head injuries after she was pushed to the wall. Strangely, in other manifestations, Shamiso gets into a state of helplessness and even when she is normal, she is helped to walk around the house.

“We do not leave her unattended, which means that it is very difficult to contribute to the family’s financial well being as someone has to watch over her at all times,” said Concilia. When The Herald carried the story sometime in August, family members were being pelted by stones at 8.08pm everyday. The times and frequency later changed, with audible claps and pinching, which often resulted in people fainting.

Affected people would lie prostrate for up to three hours. Heaps of stones, including half bricks, broken window panes and asbestos sheets characterised the house. The family has since thrown away the stones. At that time, Mrs Chiviru said the attacks were often preceded by some wind. Prior to the stones, clothes would mysteriously be found outside, including those that would have been packed in bags. During the manifestations, a person supposedly in the neighbourhood is said to boast that she is the source of the family’s afflictions.

“She says because we occupied the stand where a big tree that leads to their underground meeting place as witches is located, we will not know peace,” said Mrs Chiviru. The family misfortunes include the elder sister being left unceremoniously by her husband and one of the daughters being raped by a pastor. Another family member seems mentally challenged and is always sitting around the house. According to the family, the rape case was not handled properly, resulting in the culprit going scot free. One outstanding occurrence was when Mr Chiviru put a 3,6 inch metal sheet around her daughter Shamiso in a bid to cover her from the stone attacks. This did not help as two stones managed to penetrate the main roof and the metal sheet, giving off a thunderous sound. The stones hit her and two small footprints, like those of a baby were seen on the metal sheet.

In one of their attempts to cleanse the house, apostolic faith prophets performed rituals and buried a clay pot at their doorstep. Strangely, at times the food they prepare is filled with human waste while some of the food disappears. The Herald witnessed the strange movement in Shamiso’s belly, which seemed like a large snake.
