Star FM radio’s female presenters, in conjunction with Impala Car Rental, yesterday honoured a group of women dubbed “Community Champions”, as part of commemorations of the women’s month. The event, which was held at Impala Car Rental offices in Harare, was attended by women from all over the country who were nominated by Star FM listeners in their respective communities including Zhombe, Chivhu, Hatfield, Mabvuku and Epworth.

The event was meant to celebrate women doing charitable work in the communities from which they come.

Zimpapers public relations manager Ms Beatrice Tonhodzayi said the event was an opportunity to interact, appreciate and acknowledge stakeholders and policymakers from different societal levels.

“This is to show that as an organisation, we are gender sensitive and very much biased towards the recognition and emancipation of women as witnessed by the presence of gender editors in our publications.

“We very much value the policies formulated by Government in favour of women and also wish to make it known that we support everyone and as it is our month, we would like to celebrate our community champions who, regardless of their little income, stretch out their hands to improve the lives of those around them,” Ms Tonhodzayi said.

Star FM presenters Tariro Mazvarirwofa and Itayi Takaendesa gave the women a platform to discuss possible solutions to challenges they face in their communities.

One of the community champions who was celebrated, Mrs Mary Magombedze from Sadza in Chivhu, said she made it her responsibility to refer cases of different types of abuse and child neglect to the respective stakeholders who would then address the issues.

“There are various children out there, who are neglected and who need special care which their parents or guardians cannot afford, and this alone can destroy a bright future.

“I believe the girl child has to be empowered at an early age because it usually takes an informed mother to motivate her child to succeed in life. I also participate in counselling and motivating girls to become better mothers who are learned and informed,” Mrs Magombedze said.

The women were being celebrated because of their determination and compassion as they mostly make use of their personal savings to cater for the less privileged in their communities.

Impala Car Rental appreciated their good work by giving them food hampers and lunch at a local restaurant.

As a way of giving back to the community, Impala Car Rental runs a trust under the name Alfred Dondo Foundation, which caters for disabled and underprivileged children.

There are 55 children registered under the foundation receiving education from primary to tertiary level, and among these are those that need special education facilities due to different disabilities.

Impala Car Hire marketing executive Miss Tracy Ngoma, applauded the women’s work saying it will go a long way towards improving the girl child and the nation at large.

“As we are celebrating our 10th anniversary, we decided to do something that touches the heart to mark our anniversary, and this is exactly what we anticipated,” she said.

In tandem with this year’s theme #BeBoldForChange, women were reminded to be vigilant and bold so as to do away with the gender inequalities.
