SPORTS Commission acting chairman Edward Siwela says disciplinary measures will be taken against national associations that are not complying with the organisation’s Act.

This came to light at the recent quarterly meeting where it was reported that only eight out of the 45 registered National Sports Associations had fully complied with the provisions of the SRC Act, especially in the key areas of submitting audited financial statements, activity reports for 2014, activity calendar and budgets for the year 2015.

“I am aware that most of you will give the excuse that we cannot afford to engage auditing firms. This is not acceptable given that we gave you a waiver that you can use qualified accountants to audit your books,” said Siwela.

The eight associations and bodies which fully complied with the SRC Act are the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee, Zimbabwe National Paralympic Committee, Zimbabwe Karate Union, National Darts Association of Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe Women Golf Union, Zimbabwe Volleyball Association, Bowls Zimbabwe and Zimbabwe Cricket.

The Sports Commission is empowered to summon the errant associations or deregister them in terms of the SRC Act.

“The reason why most National Sport Associations are struggling to attract meaningful sponsorship or commercial deals which will turn around their sport is poor corporate governance,” Siwela said.
