Six Chitungwiza Municipality police officers allegedly teamed up and took turns to assault a commuter omnibus driver for demanding identification after they attempted to arrest him.

Godfrey Mapuranga (33) is jointly charged with Veronica Chipisa (42), Nyasha Chinoda (29), Thobekile Sibanda (39), Tinashe Chawapiwa (33) and Stella Nyandoro (41) all of Chitungwiza.

They were not asked to plead to assault charges when they appeared before Chitungwiza resident magistrate, Ms Renika Dzikiti.

Ms Dzikiti remanded them out of custody to January 11.

Their victim, Owen Ngirazi (23) of Manyame Park, also appeared in court before the same magistrate for allegedly kidnapping Nyandoro.

Ngirazi was remanded to the same date.

Prosecutor Ms Ntombikayise Nleya, told the court that on December 11 and at around 11am, Nyandoro boarded Ngirazi’s bus at Daddy Shopping Centre heading to St Mary’s.

Nyandoro was in the company of her two workmates.

It is alleged that Nyandoro ordered Ngirazi to stop his vehicle for no reason and he complied.

After that, Ngirazi ordered his conductor Patrick Mangachena to open the door so that Nyandoro would disembark.

However, Nyandoro allegedly ordered Ngirazi that he was under arrest, ordering him to drive to Chitungwiza Municipality head office.

Trouble started when Ngirazi asked Nyandoro to produce her identification card.

This did not go down well with Nyandoro who allegedly called the other three accomplices to the scene.

Further allegations are that on arrival, the three teamed up to assault Ngirazi.

He fell to the ground and the six continued kicking him. He reported the matter to the police leading to their arrest.
