Silver Screen: Get ready for MAMAs

ne-yoTafadzwa Zimoyo
I hope you had a lovely weekend and managed to get time for the exciting programmes lined up on ZBC TV and DStv. My favourite on DStv was the BBC Lifestyle while on ZBC TV was the School’s Quiz which is being aired during the week in the afternoon.

Of late, I have been receiving both positive and negative feedback and surprisingly some even go the extent of bringing me videos, short films and movies and other stuff to review.

Yes, it is fine but be guided I only do reviews specifically for television and film which also includes some of the content you are bringing in but I don’t have access to commission anything for MultiChoice Africa or ZBC TV as some might think.

I do critical analysis but all the same I am happy that some local producers are upping their game.

I am quite impressed with what I am observing but still a lot more needs to be done.

I also suggest that the 21st century bell should ring in your head, by that you will learn how to move with time.

Imagine some scenes are still being shot behind rocks, flowers or bus-stop which can’t be differentiated by a video from 1978.

So far I am now happy with what is being shown on ZBC TV, especially the Music Calabash which was a topical issue with many people complaining about it.

This time around if you tune to the television around lunchtime you can enjoy the freshest videos from the international scene though locally we still have the gap.

Well, it’s just three days away before the MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMAs) which this year are being held in Kwazulu- Natal.

Yes, they will be celebrating African music but yours truly will just be watching for the sake of it since Zimbabwe is not represented.

Since we are not nominated, so what if we get a chance to perform during the pre-show party, the awards themselves or the after party?

Zimbabwe is not there, period.

Commenting on the issue, MultiChoice Zimbabwe publicist Elizabeth Dziva said:

“According to Viacom Africa, your music video has to be submitted for airplay on MTV or MTV Base in the qualifying period 20 March 2014 to 19 March 2015.’’

I hope everyone is answered.

I know a lot of colleagues of mine who are going for the ceremony, one thing I am certainly sure is they will represent well on the red carpet.

Get ready for some action.

However, on more a positive note, I also heard that this year is bigger and better as top international acts such as Ne-Yo are not only coming to perform but there is strong competition on their introduced category.

MTV Base has revealed that Beyoncé, Big Sean, Chris Brown, Nicki Minaj and Rihanna have been nominated for Best International Act.

The winner, chosen by music fans voting online at <http://mama.mtv.com>, will be revealed at the live awards ceremony this Saturday.

First introduced in 2010, the Best International Act award has been previously won by Pharrell Williams (2014) and Eminem (2010).

Best International Act is the sole category that recognises the contribution of international artistes at the MAMA; the remaining 17 awards categories are all awarded to African artistes.

The awards show will be broadcast live across Africa on MTV Base (DStv channel 322), MTV (DStv channel 130) and BET (DStv channel 129) at 21:00 CAT.

The show will also be transmitted worldwide on partner stations and content platforms including BET International from July 18.

In addition, a special MAMA-themed edition of MTV’s acclaimed World Stage franchise will air globally on MTV channels around the world on August 27.
