Afro jazz singer Selmor Mtukudzi and dendera musician Tryson Chimbetu will headline the inaugural James Chimombe commemoration gig slated for this Saturday at the Hilltop Bar in Warren Park.
In an interview with The Herald Entertainment, event organiser and daughter of the late Chimombe, Tendai, said preparations are at an advanced stage.

“Preparations for our first tribute gig for my father are at an advanced level and a number of artistes have agreed to come and perform on the night.

“On the line up we now have Selmor Mtukudzi and Tryson Chimbetu that will headline the show and we are looking forward to have an exciting event. Other musicians are still to confirm their participation,” she said.

Tendai has urged people from all walks of life to come in their numbers to grace the event.

“My father had a legion of fans who appreciated his music and I am encouraging them come and celebrate his achievements for his legacy to live forever,” she said.

Other artistes to perform include Diana Samkange, Portifa Mopo, Benjamin Chidewe, Andrew Mavhura, Tenadai and Morgan Dembo among others.

Tendai, who is also into music, said she penned a tribute song which she will perform on the day.

“I composed a special song called ‘Legend’ dedicated to him because I believe that he was truly a legend and I will launch it on the day,” she said.

Tendai has promised her fans a polished act and she will perform some of her father’s songs. “As Huchi Band we are going to offer the best to our fans as we shall be playing some of his hit songs that many still enjoy to this day,” she said. Tendai has been in the music industry for a few years now. She attained a National Certificate in Music at the Zimbabwe College of Music last year. Born on February 22, 1972 in Harare, Tendai is the first born in the family of the late musician followed by Freddy, Linda, Linden, Kudakwashe (now late) and Tatenda who is based in the United Kingdom. James Chimombe died on October 23, 1990. He was known for his popular hits such as “Zvaitika” , “Munakandafa” , “Kudakwashe” and “Bindura”.
