Primary schools should invest in libraries and employ competent librarians for sound management to ensure pupils benefit from the resources.

The call was made by University of Zimbabwe Vice Chancellor Professor Levi Nyagura during the handover of books and laptops to 90 primary schools in Harare recently.

The books were donated by the UZ and Foundations for Farming.

Prof Nyagura said books were assets every school should treasure.

“A book in the hands of a child can lead to endless possibilities. Imaginations can be ignited, doors can be opened and new worlds can be discovered.

“I hope you will ensure that the books will be put to good use to support productive teaching and learning at your schools,” he said.

Prof Nyagura said primary schoolteachers must cultivate a reading culture in pupils at a tender age.

“We expect primary schools to invest in libraries where books are kept for the purpose of giving equal access to all learners. It is also high time that schools begin to realise the need for employing competent librarians to manage these treasured assets,” he said.

Prof Nyagura said he hoped that laptops would help pupils develop sound Information and Communication Technology skills.

“The future of this country can only be bright if our pupils begin to appreciate and use technology to their advantage from early years,” said Professor Nyagura.

Chief of Staff General Staff Zimbabwe National Army Major-General Trust Mugoba, said he was humbled and honoured to receive 60 laptops and several textbooks on behalf of the commander ZNA, Zimbabwe National Army Schools Welfare and Trust (ZNASWT) and the 18 army schools.

“Being a career of knowledge, books are a ladder of human progress. They are an important resource for both teachers and students,” he said.

Some of the schools which received books and laptops are Aryshire, Dzivaresekwa Barracks Primary, Dzivaresekwa 5, Epworth Primary, Inkomo Primary, Parachute Primary, Tafara 1 Primary and 2 Brigade Primary School.
