LONDON. – Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has declared his fear that the Red Devils could be heading into the footballing wilderness. After last season’s seventh place disaster under David Moyes, United made a less than impressive start to the 2014-15 campaign by losing their opening game against Swansea at Old Trafford. And Scholes is worried that United – the English Premier League’s most dominant side since its inception in 1992 – could now be set for a long-term decline.

“The situation now, with 11 days of the transfer window left, has become ever more desperate for my former club,” said Scholes, writing in his column in the Independent. “They have to sign some quality players.

“I am scared for United. Genuinely scared that they could go into the wilderness in the same way that Liverpool did in the 1990s.”

And the midfielder, who retired from playing in 2013 and spent last season coaching the club’s youth teams, says that United need five new players who can instantly make an impression in the first team. – The Mirror.
