Local artistes and arts managers will have an opportunity to professionally equip themselves through an arts management course underway at the University of Zimbabwe. The training programme, which helps participants sharpen their arts management skills, is being facilitated by Savannah Trust in conjunction with University of Zimbabwe Theatre Department.

Savanna Trust Director Daniel Maposa said the programme would run for three months.
“This is a pioneering project for practising arts managers and artistes who want to brand themselves. We are bridging a gap in the sector where the business aspect of arts is not being realised. Many local artistes are producing brilliant work yet they lack professional management,” he said.

Maposa said the programme involved professionals from South Africa that would impart their expertise to participants as part of a cultural exchange initiative.

“This year we have Dr Emmah Durben from Twist projects in Durban. She is also the chairperson of a performing arts network in her country and has vast knowledge in the trade. Nicholas Moyo from the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe comes in to contextualise the teachings and make them relevant to our local industry,” he said.

Maposa highlighted that upon completion of the course, participants sit for examinations and present assignments and research projects that are marked and graded. Certificates will be issued on merit and not attendance.

Over 20 contestants from Harare, Beitbridge and Masvingo have enrolled for the course. Among the participants are musician Munya Mataruse and actor Tavonga Mafundikwa.
