LUSAKA. — Dr Christine Kaseba Sata, widow of president Michael Sata has successfully and officially filed in her nomination for PF candidature in the upcoming presidential by-election. This comes after many calls for her to challenge for the presidency especially from the women’s movement civil society. The former first lady says her decision to apply for nomination follows numerous calls from Zambians to her to challenge for the presidency.

Dr Kaseba said she was offering herself as a neutral candidate who would embrace everyone and push the vision of her late husband having worked hard with him from the inception of the party.

Yesterday, the YWCA said “the tussle for the highest seat in the party among the men folk is worrying” and so called upon Dr Kaseba to “step into the political arena and vie for the presidency of the PF”.

“We are aware that the death of your beloved husband is a big blow to you and We know that you will continue to mourn him for a long time to come. We urge you to summon that inner strength that lies deep within you as a woman and rise to this occasion. We strongly feel that if you step forward and declare your candidature, this will help to bridge the succession disputes that have currently rocked the Patriotic front. You have the qualities to take over the leadership of the party and continue to deliver on the pro-poor campaign on which the PF won elections in September 2011,” said the YWCA statement signed by Lucy Masiye Lungu.

“After 50 years of independence, we would like to see more women assuming the position of party presidency in political parties,” the statement said. — The Post.
