Mrs Ellen Barwe (nee Chongo), wife to ZBC chief correspondent Reuben Barwe, was yesterday laid to rest at Warren Hills Cemetery in Harare following her death from kidney failure on Tuesday.

Mrs Barwe died at the Avenues Clinic a week after she had been admitted.

She was a renowned senior teacher at Warren Park Primary School and a dedicated United Methodist Church member.

Addressing mourners at a church service held for the deceased, Barwe described his wife as a true companion who will not be easy to replace.

“In Ellen, I have lost a true companion. She was a quiet woman of substance and in her death, I have lost a friend, an advisor and the whole Barwe family has indeed lost a mother,” he said.

On behalf of ZBC staff and executive Mr Tazzen Mandizvidza praised the late Mrs Barwe’s support towards her husband’s career as a journalist.

“This woman lying here was very strong and understanding, considering the extraordinary demands of her husband’s career. For instance, there are times that we even had duty calls at midnight but this woman, was very supportive,” he said

“A home is built by a woman and what we see of our brother here, is a true reflection of the caring qualities of his wife and we say farewell to her.”

Principal director in the Ministry of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services Mr Regis Chikowore said the ministry was greatly saddened by the passing on of Mrs Barwe, urging Reuben to stay strong.

“We received the sad news a few days ago and we are here to mourn with a brother we have been working with for a long time,” he said.

“Her death has reminded me of what President Mugabe always says in times like this; we walk around without knowledge of what is destroying us inside, thus it is important to take regular health check-ups. As Government, today we are present to comfort Barwe and his family.”

Hundreds of people attended the burial, among them Major-General Douglas Nyikayaramba, Ambassador Jonathan Wutawunashe, Ambassador James Manzou, and journalists from the private and public media as well as international correspondents.

Yesterday, Information, Media and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr Christopher Mushohwe, permanent secretary Mr George Charamba and several senior public servants also visited the family home to pay their condolences.
