LONDON. — Wayne Rooney will play his boyhood team Everton in his Manchester United testimonial at Old Trafford on August 3. The United forward, who started his career at Goodison Park, had to persuade Everton manager Roberto Martinez to agree to the fixture just a week before the start of the next Premier League season.

Martinez was initially reluctant to play United just seven days before the 2016-17 season kicks off, but the Everton boss has been persuaded to take his team to Old Trafford for Rooney.

It is believed final negotiations took place with Everton and Martinez gave the go-ahead for the fixture after discussions with senior board members.

All the profits from the fixture, which is expected to be televised and will most likely be a sell-out, will go to four designated charities chosen by Rooney. — Mailonline.
