Rooftop Promotions have unveiled Wene Music Awards in a bid to honour musicians for various achievements. Speaking to journalists in the capital yesterday Rooftop Board Director Ray Mawerera said the organisation was motivated by the revolution in the music industry.
“We have in this country witnessed, in the last few years, an exciting revolution in the arts, and particularly music. Barriers have been broken, new styles have emerged and our traditional ways of doing things have been challenged hence giving us the courage to launch these awards,” said Mawerera.

He said these awards will cross all genres and they will try to search for talent across all divides.

“As promoters of Wene, we want to encourage our adjudicators to scan the entire country for such talent. Some of it is hiding in the nooks and cranes of Muzarabani, Lupane, Dangamvura, Chinotimba or Mpopoma. It must come out,” he said.

Rooftop director Daves Guzha said they will be unveiling the panel of adjudicators very soon and those are the people who will announce the categories.

“Those are the right people to announce the categories but it is definite that the first edition of the awards is going to be held in October,” said Guzha.

National Arts Council of Zimbabwe deputy director Nicholas Moyo said their organisation is ready to assist them.

“They came to us in 2012 talking about the awards and we are happy that they have managed to work on them two years down the lane and we will assist them,” said Moyo.

Rooftop was involved in running the now defunct Zimbabwe Music Awards for two years and they are looking forward to work hard in ensuring that talent is searched in the country.
