POLICE have warned Zimbabweans to secure their homes and businesses following an upsurge in robbery cases across the country. The criminals are reportedly moving in groups. Chief police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba told The Herald on Tuesday that the Zimbabwe Republic Police was on high alert and the criminals faced imminent arrest.“We are already on high alert and we have also arrested some of these criminals that have been robbing people. We would want to urge people to be wary of criminal activities and to quickly report to police,” she said.

Snr Asst Comm Charamba urged people to desist from walking alone at night especially in secluded places.

She also advised people attending the Zimbabwe Agricultural Show to be wary of criminals.

“People should be alert. They should avoid boarding private vehicles as these are some of the cars that are being used by criminals to rob people. We, however, have a database in which we have identified some of the criminals and they will soon be arrested,” she said.

Between August 19 and 22, several people were robbed of their valuables in separate incidents in Harare and Mashonaland West province, among other areas.

In one of the incidents, four armed robbers raided a food court at Machipisa Shopping Centre early on Sunday morning and got away with an undisclosed amount of cash.

The four were travelling in a white Toyota Corolla, which was reportedly stolen the previous night.

After robbing the food court, the robbers went on to pounce on a service station in Dzivarasekwa.

They disappeared with an undisclosed amount of cash and mobile phones.

Snr Asst Comm Charamba said there was also a black Toyota Vitz, registration number ABH 0018, that was targeting women.

She said aboard the vehicle would be three people, including the driver.

The robbers, who were armed twith knives, preyed on c0mmuters desperate for transportt, she said.

. A female passenger will be sitting on the front seat while the third armed robber will be hiding in the boot of the vehicle. They target victims who have been offered a lift,” she said.
