THREE daring armed robbers allegedly set a roadblock while donning police uniforms and robbed unsuspecting motorists.

Clever Muchariwona (30) of Bikita, Lovemore Tafadzwa Murehwa (28) and Mathew Kapumha Murehwa, all of Rusape, appeared in court on Tuesday and pleaded not guilty to four counts of armed robbery.

They appeared before Rusape regional magistrate Mr Livingstone Chipadza, who adjourned the matter to October 10 for continuation of trial.

Rusape prosecutor Mr Tirivanhu Mutyasira told the court that the trio masqueraded as traffic cops and mounted a roadblock before robbing a truck driver, Fungaru Kanguru at gunpoint.

“On November 14, 2016 at around 10.15pm, the three accused persons connived and hatched a plan to steal from truck drivers using the Harare- Mutare Highway at the 192km peg.

“The trio dressed in police uniforms and mounted a roadblock. They stopped a haulage truck from ZX Fuels, Registration Number ACQ4926 which was being driven by Fungaru Kanguru. The truck was coming from Mutare.

“Armed with a pistol and knives, two of the accused persons opened the truck’s passenger door and entered into the vehicle, while the remaining accused person went to the driver’s door and threatened Kanguru with a pistol. He ordered him to remain silent.

“The two accused persons who were in the vehicle ordered Kanguru to surrender all his property to save his life.’’
