Government is negotiating with two local companies for the supply of road construction equipment in a bid to improve service delivery in line with the economic blueprint Zim-Asset, Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Minister Ignatius Chombo, has said.

Officially opening a clinic in Mhondoro-Ngezi last week, Minister Chombo said the equipment would be sourced on credit.

“My ministry has negotiated two credit facilities with local firms XGMA-Zimbabwe and XCMG-Zimbabwe for the supply of various road-making equipment such as graders, excavators and front-end loaders, among others, at affordable rates,” he said.

“We are hopeful that the modalities relating to the same will be finalised soon, to facilitate immediate implementation.”

Minister Chombo said Government was aware of the challenges facing most local authorities and was doing all it could to assist.

“Government is aware of the challenges being placed by the adverse macro-economic conditions not only in your council (Mhondoro-Ngezi), but all local authorities in the country.

“You will agree with me that the unfavourable economic situation has seriously compromised the ability of local authorities to provide services to their communities in a sustainable manner,” he said.

“However, in spite of such drawbacks, the ministry continues to see notable successes in terms of service delivery across the country in areas such as road maintenance, water and sanitation and housing development, among others.”

Minister Chombo also commissioned capital equipment procured by Mhondoro-Ngezi Rural District Council.

“It is with great pleasure for me as the Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing to be invited to officially commission the new clinic situated at Battlefields as well as capital equipment in the manner of a motorised grader, tow grader and a seven-tonne lorry recently procured by Mhondoro-Ngezi Rural District Council.

“Indeed, this is a momentous occasion that fully resonates with Government’s national development agenda as espoused in the Zim-Asset programme,” he said.

Minister Chombo urged local authorities to get into partnership with private companies and speed up development in areas under their jurisdiction.

“Let me assure you that Government is committed to supporting local authority recapitalisation initiatives through exploring alternative funding modalities for councils,” he said.
