Retailers, please keep expired food items off the shelf!

In an interview yesterday, CCZ regional manager for the Matabeleland region Mr Comfort Muchekeza said of late they established that a number of retailers in the city were selling foodstuffs which were about to expire or have expired thus posing a health threat if consumed.
However, he could not give statistics.

“As CCZ, we have realised that there are some retail outlets that are selling expired products and thus prompting us to undertake the operation. The operation started last week and we normally do it periodically,” said Mr Muchekeza. “In the case, where we establish that the retailers is selling expired products, we educate the service provider not to sell such products because of the health implications engendered by consuming such items.”

Some of the expired products that CCZ observed on shelves included flour, biscuits, baby foodstuffs and tomato sauce.
Mr Muchekeza said they would soon engage the Bulawayo City Council’s health department and licensing inspectorate to conduct the raids which would see such products being confiscated if found on shelves.-Chronicle
