Police officers countrywide have been urged to respect people’s rights and to display a human face when conducting their duties. Commissioner (responsible for training and development) Grace Ndebele urged officers to desist from indulging in illegal and corrupt activities that tarnish the image of the force. She was speaking at the pass-out parade of 22 policemen and women at Morris Depot in Harare yesterday.

“Allow me at this point to urge you, graduands on parade, to grow into beacons of justice and morality in the communities you will serve. While it is an undeniable fact that the primary role of the police is to enforce the laws of the country, allow me also to stress that in doing this demanding duty, you must and ought to exhibit a human face,” she said.

Corrupt elements
Comm Ndebele said: “In that regard, I urge you to give high respect to the rights of citizens, at the same time ensuring that you give all clients a full measure of our service.”

She said the force did not tolerate corrupt elements and had both legal and administrative apparatus to eject such members from duty. She said the force was the cornerstone of the country’s peace and security.

Comm Ndebele said as Government engaged a “higher gear” in accelerating the implementation of Zim-Asset, the officers must continue to selflessly discharge their duties of maintaining peace and tranquillity in the country.

“It is thus pleasing that the 2015 policing theme, ‘ZRP creating a conducive environment for economic growth and empowerment’, ensured that there was consistency and persistence at all levels to uphold the guiding vision of Zim-Asset which says, “towards an empowered society and a growing econ- omy”.

“Indeed, as we get into the year 2016, we must persist in gallantly discharging of our constitutional mandate with the necessary attitudes and perceptions in tandem with the year’s theme which says, ‘ZRP nurturing positive attitudes, skills and knowledge to meet national demands’,” she said.

Cybercrime
Comm Ndebele said criminals were gradually taking over the commanding heights of business units using highly sophisticated computer technologies.

She said the exposure of these graduands to modern information and technology as well as accounting had increasingly become paramount in decimating white collar and cyber crimes.

Comm Ndebele expressed sadness over the continued loss of lives on the country’s roads as a result of accidents. “As we approach the festive holidays, where many people traverse the length and breadth of the country, we, as police, shall be fully deployed to enforce the country’s traffic laws and road regulations.

“The police shall not hesitate to arrest any person found on the wrong side of the law, irrespective of their status in life. By the same measure, I would like to urge members of the public to desist from boarding private transport and utilise official public service vehicles when travelling,” she said.
