Zimbabwe’s neighbours have awarded the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education a medal for its outstanding contribution in improving the quality of education in the region through research and training programmes. Zimbabwe was awarded the medal by the Southern and Eastern Africa Consortium for Monitoring Educational Quality (SACMEQ), which Zimbabwe is a member at a conference held in Paris, France recently.

Addressing a Press conference in Harare on Friday, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Lazarus Dokora said the award represents the United Nations and Africa’s recognition of Zimbabwe’s position in providing quality education.

“The ministry is motivated to continue with action research and built on its high literacy rate,” Minister Dokora said.
He said Government’s programmes such as e-learning and infant school module, among others, had broadened access to education and promoted equity and quality.

Minister Dokora, however, said there was a need to be alert to the leadership role in Africa.
“The award is received in the name of Zimbabwe with honour and pride,” he  said.

Minister Dokora said on the last two days of this month, his ministry would be hosting an infrastructure expo and conference meant to enhance the quality of education with regards to infrastructure.

He called on all companies to support the expo by exhibiting their work in infrastructure.
SACMEQ is an inter-governmental association of 16 ministries of Education in south and east Africa.

It was registered in Zimbabwe in 1997.
